Welcome, ladies and gents to part 3 of my Instagram series …
…all about taking your Instagram account to the next level. This post is going to be all about my favorite ways to increase engagement on your account (which will aid in increasing your followers and broaden your outreach!)
So far, we have covered how to optimize your Instagram profile to draw in your audience as well as some great tips and strategies to improve your hashtag game and utilize influencers in your niche.
1. Alrighty then, now onto increasing your engagement!
First and maybe most importantly, increase your engagement by engaging on other people’s posts! With well over 700,000 MILLION active users, engaging with other accounts on Instagram is a sure-fire way to increase your account’s success. (Source)
I like to start out by following influencers within my niche, and always making sure to engage, like, comment, ask questions, etc on their posts.
This does 1 huge favor for you: it gets your name out there on popular posts and people start taking notice. It also benefits you second hand by seeing what posts on popular accounts perform well in your niche, and it always helps to inspire and hone in on posts that do well with your target audience.
Okay, so how do we find influencers in your niche in order to follow them (and in turn convert their followers into your followers as well?)
Use popular hashtags associated with your niche market to find influencers in your industry. Hashtags aren’t only useful in boosting your own posts, but for research as well!
Do a scan through your own followers and see who THEY are following. Remember- your goal is to attract people to your profile that are already interested in what you have to say and post, and by seeing who they follow- you gain invaluable information on what your followers are liking and engaging with!
2. Throw in some “behind-the-scenes” photos
This piggy backs off of what I mentioned in the first post in this series, about people wanting to connect a real person with your account. It helps bring humanity into your profile, as well as just being relatable to your followers.
It can be an awesome picture of your work area, or perhaps a snapshot of your weekly content planner. It can be any number of background shots relevant to your account. But throwing in a behind-the-scenes post here and there should help to shed light on your day-to-day schedule, process or story and people dig it.
3. Include a Call to Action
This is a huge tool that if you are currently ignoring; STOP IGNORING THIS.
Including a call-to-action in your caption is a huge way to increase engagement on your posts. It opens the door for communication and connecting with your followers. Ask them a question for them to answer in a comment. Ask them to read your new blog post (link in bio!) Tell them you are offering a discount code or freebie, but they have to do something in order to receive it, such as subscribe to your blog, comment on your post or tag a friend or two, etc.
The whole idea of this is to prolong the engagement of your followers and continue their focus onto you. Of course you can post awesome photos, have great captions and utilize all the right hashtags, but by including a call-to-action, you are expanding their attention on you and your brand for even longer! This means more engagement, more blog views, increased sales, etc! THIS IS HUGE.

4. Consider the time of day
If you have a business account for your Instagram, take a look at your analytics regularly to get insights into your followers and their behavior. As you can see from my own account, my followers are pretty consistently engaging during the day, tapering off towards the evening and night time. Because of this, I typically post during business hours during the day. If you don’t have a business account and therefore have no analytics to refer to, posting during regular business hours is usually a safe bet.
As you can see, many of my followers are from New York and Los Angeles. Two different time zones. So keeping that in mind- you should think about when a good time of day to post is in relation to the majority of your followers.
Speaking of using Instagram’s analytics- it’s never a bad idea to keep your eye on it. You can see insights into the performance of each of your posts, which will help you to hone in on what your target audience likes more when it comes to your content. When you find something that seems to work really well- do more posts like it!
Maybe your quote posts perform way better than your behind-the-scenes posts, that’s totally okay! That just helps you learn more about your audience and this helps to boost your future posts because you’ll have an idea on which posts will do better. It’s an experimental process, but if you follow these tactics, your Instagram account will star booming and you can utilize it’s success to boost your blog views, drive sales and build your brand awareness!
Go forth and do you, boo.
